Mark A. Katz, M.D.

Born in Radford, Virginia, Dr. Katz grew up moving around the South with his family before settling North in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania region. Before long, Dr. Katz traveled to New England for his undergraduate education at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and excelled in varsity football as an Academic All-American. He received numerous football honors including scholar-athlete awards from the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston, the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Returning to Philadelphia in 1991, Dr. Katz received his medical school education at the University of Pennsylvania where he remained for his internship and Orthopaedic Surgery residency. At the completion of his Orthopaedic training in 2000, Dr. Katz received the F. William Bora, Jr., M.D. Award for excellence in Upper Extremity Surgery. He continued his upper extremity training with a fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at Duke University Medical Center.
Through extensive fellowship training under the direction of James R. Urbaniak, M.D. in the microvascular technique of free vascularized fibular grafting, Dr. Katz has additional expertise and interest in the treatment of hip avascular necrosis (AVN), better known as osteonecrosis, and complex fracture nonunions of the upper extremity. Dr. Katz is a member of the National Osteonecrosis Foundation.
Prior to joining The Hand Center, Dr. Katz was in solo practice in the Philadelphia and Central New Jersey regions and served as a surgical consultant within the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
Dr. Katz is an antique car and Harley Davidson enthusiast and enjoys golf, the outdoors, and spending time with his family and dogs.
