Dr. Johnston was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but sought warmer climate at the University of Arizona for her college education with the initial intention of a career in golf. During her freshman year, however, her interests shifted toward medicine, and she remained at Arizona on an academic scholarship by maintaining a 4.0 G.P.A., graduating with highest honors.

Dr. Johnston traveled east to Vanderbilt University for her medical education, and initially began a residency in head and neck surgery at UCLA. At the end of her internship year, she was named "Surgical Intern of the Year," an honor that helped her to change residencies back to her first love, orthopaedics.

During her orthopaedic residency, Dr. Johnston was selected to complete a 12 month National Institute of Health funded research fellowship in Joint Arthroplasty. In 1994, she became the second woman ever to complete an orthopaedic residency at UCLA. Following her residency, Dr. Johnston came to San Antonio to complete her training as a hand fellow at The Hand Center. She did such an outstanding job during her fellowship that she was asked to join our staff.

Dr. Johnston's special interests in the field of upper extremity surgery include treatment of complex elbow problems: reconstructive microsurgery of the upper extremity, and arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

Her outside interests include her three sons, wine tasting and skiing. She is still working on getting her golf game back in shape.
